Michela, local hero

Michela currently works as a healthcare assistant

How did you get to where you were? I left secondary school at 16 and entombed into a legal apprenticeship. I’ve worked my way into healthcare industry and now currently work as a healthcare assistant. I got to where I am by taking on adult responsibilities and experiencing environmental trauma.

Who or what inspires you? My mum because I’ve grown up watching her work 3 jobs. My best friend because she always academically persevering. Lastly growing in an unprivileged environment.

What have you found the most challenging? I have found taking on adulthood most challenging for example; being able to educate and discipline myself as well as prioritising my future over temporary comfort.

What have you found the most rewarding? I have found working multiple jobs my most rewarding thing right now. This is mostly because I am able to help my friends and family financially. I also have to be independent and disciplined yet still persevere to get where I need to be.

What advice would you give others? I would advise people to prioritise their future. Make small sacrifices now that will benefit you years from now. Keep positive and encouraging company around you and do not fall into society’s pressures about where they think you’re supposed to be at this age. Lastly, be kind, genuine and aspirational - be the positive, evolving change that everyone is seeking.
